East China is the geographic area and cultural region that covers China’s eastern seaboard. Located in this part of China is the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) city cluster that spans Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui. It is known as the most economically developed region in the country. Currently, the YRD contributes 24% to China’s GDP. With a population of 240 million people, the region is valued for its huge purchasing power. As a flourishing hub for foreign trade, the YRD accounts for 30% of the country’s imports and exports. Renowned for acting as a magnet for top talent, it is a crucial part of China’s financial services industry.
The YRD is home to three of the world’s top ten ports, including the Port of Shanghai, one of the world’s busiest container ports, handling 47 million TEUs annually. The Port of Ningbo handles about 34 million TEUs annually. The Port of Suzhou handles about 8.1 million TEUs annually. The region has a network of 16 civil transportation airports, ranking first in terms of passenger traffic among the three major airport groups.
The area covers 10 cities, including Shanghai, Suzhou, Kunshan, Nanjing, Wuxi, Hangzhou and Jiaxing. The major economic zones are financial, industrial, automotive manufacturing and international trade.
