May 12 marks Prologis’ 11th annual global day of service, IMPACT Day, when employees from Prologis China actively participated in volunteer activities centered around the theme of “Zero-waste Farming” in major cities across China, including Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Chengdu. In an enthusiastic demonstration of their commitment to green and sustainable ecology, a team of 110 dedicated Prologis volunteers took part in a number of urban farming activities. Their efforts contributed not only to the well-being of the community but also to conveying the care and warmth that Prologis China is known for.
Since 2013, Prologis has been organizing an annual IMPACT Day in May around the globe. This event serves as a catalyst for inspiring employees to step beyond their office walls and actively participate in a wide range of volunteer services within their communities. By engaging in these activities, Prologis aims to promote its ESG practices and showcase its unwavering dedication to corporate social responsibility. Over the span of the past 11 years, this philanthropic initiative has successfully brought together a dedicated team of Prologis volunteers from various corners of the globe. As we move forward, the spirit of this endeavor will continue to thrive, evolving into even more innovative and heartfelt ways of giving back to the community.
Zero-waste Farming: an approach to sustainable ecology
Land is a vital resource relied upon for its ability to yield the food that is essential for human sustenance. Engaging in sustainable production practices not only enhances crop quality and reduces the environmental footprint of agriculture but also fosters greater soil health and water security.
Prologis China’s “Zero-waste Farming” campaign saw the enthusiastic participation of volunteers, who engaged in “sandwich” composting and planting organic vegetables. Through their involvement in these activities, the volunteers made significant contributions to improving and preserving soil quality while simultaneously ensuring the efficient utilization of a farm’s natural resources. This event not only exemplified their dedication to promoting green and low-carbon sustainable development but also provided a physical demonstration of their commitment in action.
At the farm, the volunteers commenced to remove weeds from the cultivated land and gather manure from farm animals. The collected manure underwent a subsequent fermentation process, resulting in the production of organic fertilizer. Utilization of this organic fertilizer will not only serve to yield crops that are healthy and free from pollution but also contribute to the enhancement of soil quality.
Spreading love: organic vegetable donations to the elderly
The progress in living standards has largely diminished the prominence of the term “hunger” in everyday discussion. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that certain vulnerable populations still endure the effects of “hidden hunger”, which can occur as a result of inadequate nutrition or deficiencies in specific vitamins and minerals. The World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations have unequivocally identified “hidden hunger” as a significant concern that poses a real and tangible threat to human health.
During IMPACT Day, Prologis volunteers from Shanghai, Chengdu, and Shenzhen came together to successfully harvest over 480 pounds of organic vegetables from farms. This fresh produce was carefully picked, packed, and stored in environmentally friendly canvas bags, thoughtfully crafted by the volunteers using natural plant materials. Through collaborative efforts with the Green Food Bank, the first food bank in China, and the Zhongkai Yuhua Mutual Aid Association, the donated vegetables were directed to more than 420 senior citizens, and a community canteen specially dedicated to serving elderly individuals living on their own.
The Prologis volunteers in Beijing diligently cultivated a vegetable patch on the farm and provided meticulous care to ensure the healthy growth of the vegetables. Upon reaching the harvest season, these vegetables will be donated to select communities in Beijing.
Through our annual global volunteer activities, Prologis maintains a steadfast commitment to making meaningful differences in the communities where we operate. We leverage our leadership, resources, and unwavering passion to create a positive impact in the realms of education, the environment, and human health. Our ultimate aim is to benefit a greater number of individuals and contribute to the overall improvement of local communities. By the end of 2022, Prologis had accumulated a remarkable 33,000 hours of volunteer service worldwide. In the future, Prologis will look to solidify its position as a champion for sustainable development and will continue its efforts to contribute towards making the world a better place for all.
